I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts last week, The Social Media Marketing Talk Show, and they mentioned that Instagram quietly rolled out the ability to post via the “Creator Studio” right from your desktop or laptop computer! Although Instagram has been a great platform for businesses to use for marketing and brand awareness, up until now, you could only post on Instagram from your phone or by using a third party tool. This has made using Instagram inconvenient because business owners are already extremely busy without having to be on their phones all day posting on Instagram, and third-party tools usually cost money and can be a lot to learn. This new Instagram feature not only allows you to post from your computer, but it also allows you to schedule your posts in advance!
Using the Creator Studio to Post on Instagram from Your Computer
- You can get to the Creator Studio by either going to your Facebook page or business.facebook.com/creatorstudio. Click on the Instagram icon located in the blue bar at the top of the page. Then, click on “Add an Instagram account” to link your Instagram account.
- Then, click on “Create Post.” You can either post to IGTV or to your Instagram Feed, but you cannot post an Instagram Story. I think this is a strategic move on Instagram’s part because they want stories to continue to be spontaneous and “in the moment” and not planned out (like we all know we want to do). Once you’ve clicked on “Create Post,” there's a space to type in your caption, and a space to upload your photo or video. You can upload your photo or video either from your computer or from your Facebook page. You can crop your photo either square, landscape, or vertical right there in that space. Don’t forget to add your hashtags and your location.
- If you choose to cross-post from IG to FB, clean up the post. Edit out the hashtags because Facebook users typically don’t use hashtags on Facebook. Edit out any other language that's native to Instagram, like “Double click to like this post.” You might also have to edit the tags of businesses that you want to tag because their account names may be different on Facebook than Instagram.
- At this point, you can’t delete an Instagram post from your computer. In order to delete an Instagram post, you still have to use your phone.
